SDG has been privileged to be located in the community of Civano, with multiple projects sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. One project is a new two story home on a narrow lot. The objective was to make this space feel as open and loft like as possible, given the site and zoning restrictions. It also needed to comply with the specific design and environmental requirements within Civano including solar orientation, energy efficiency, water usage, and sense of engagement with the local buildings. One design element that centered the home is the two story living room with metal stairs leading to a wrap around second floor overhang. Large windows face the north, which allow for passive light throughout the day, as well as views of nearby trees and mountains. Concrete masonry, required for fire separation, was highlighted instead of being covered up. The second floor balcony over the front door cantilevers, thus providing a visual point of entry and keeping the entrance free of columns. Other elements included barn doors, overhangs over key windows, solar water heater, and a separate building that houses the garage and utility room.
